The Residual Current Monitor (RCM) range is intended for the detection of DC and/or AC residual currents in AC or DC installations. These RCMs are ideally suited for use with Electric Vehicle charging cables (Mode 2 Protection) and EV charging stations (Mode 3 Protection). Residual current detection options for IEC based requirements are 30mA AC or 6mA DC or both and are 20mA AC & 6mA DC for UL requirements.

Mode 2

IEC 62955 Residual Direct Current Monitoring Device to be used for Mode 3 charging of Electric Vehicle.

The Residual Current Monitor (RCM) module is connected in series with the AC supply to an EV and will provide an output if a DC current ≥ 6mA DC flows in the circuit. This output can be used to operate an RCD, a circuit breaker or a contactor to remove the supply to the EV.

RCM14

In the event of a DC current flowing in an AC circuit, protection may be disabled on the AC operated RCD due to blinding of the RCD, and thereby removing the protection on the installation.

AC protection will be typically 30 milliamps and DC protection will typically be 6 milliamps. We are therefore challenged with detecting both 6 milliamps DC and 30 milliamps AC to ensure protection is at its highest under all circumstances when we are charging an electric vehicle.

Type B RCD

The Type B RCD and the EV RCD are two stand alone devices that can detect AC and DC residual fault currents in Mode 3 charging applications and therefore the EV installation does not require additional monitoring for fault currents.

Type EV RCD

The Type EV RCCB has been developed specifically for EV charging systems and can detect AC and DC  residual currents in accordance with the requirements of IEC62955. This provides a lower cost option to the Type B RCD and has been designed specifically for use in Mode 3 and Mode 4 EV charging applications.
